At various points in my life, there have been distinct patterns to my dreams. I am not one to get mystical about dreams, as I watch my cats dream, too. But I do think about it as a brain's way of sorting and cleaning and dealing with the garbage.
There was a time when I was a child where I had lots of dreams where I was being chased, and I was frozen and couldn't move fast enough to get away from the terror.
There was a time as an adult where I repeatedly found myself in public toilets or baths which had no privacy - like the only available toilet was sitting right in the middle of the mall with people walking to and fro, and I could.not.wait.
The last couple years I seem to have a lot of dreams of inconvenience. This morning's I will give you as an example...
I was going to take a violin lesson; I think I was starting a new degree program. But I had not had time to prepare for the lesson, so I was going to have to sight-read music which I was needing to play at the rehearsal, which I had to leave the lesson early to make on time. And I had one of my kids along foe the ride who needed to be attended to. And the teacher was seeing me in the living room of the new apartment he had just moved into; he was busy setting up a tent there, as he had no furiture yet and would need a place to sleep, so he didn't really have much time to help me. And before we got started, the next student was arriving and unpacking...
Then I found myself pushing a shopping trolley, uphill, against the flow of many people and most awkwardly, up some stone stairs. It had a crooked wheel, and the hallway we were all crammed into was constructed with irritating bends...
Fortunately I soon found myself in my own apartment. Which was in complete disarray. And despite having four or five computers set up in my living room, all but one were obsolete. The working machine was having difficulties, and no one was home to help me, so I had to call a tech support guy. He came out and was working on it, and I thought maybe I should use that time to clear out the obsolete machinery and rearrange the living room to be slightly more functional. In the course of that I found a large zippered bag with something awful rotting inside - like maybe a dead animal. So I went out to the apartment hallway to find the trash room to throw away this horrible, dripping thing. It turned out I lived on one of the floors which didn't have a trash room, so I was crashing through a stream of people while trying to find the service elevator to go to a floor where I could get rid of the vileness. And the tech guy came running after me to update me on the problem, but it turned out the door to my apartment had locked behind him, and neither of us had a key and neither did the office...
So I woke up and got out of bed, because that was absolutely enough junk sorting for one night.
I hope you are laughing as hard as I am.
Even though it does sort of seem to reflect reality just a little too much.
