Last Tuesday after group class, we picked up Roy at the airport. Since then I've given him three violin lessons, and he's watched me teach five other lessons, done beaucoup de housework, practiced a shocking number of hours, and started reading Nurtured by Love. He's not wasting his time, that's for sure!
Friday I picked up Jared from work and we drove down to Portland to his parents' church where we set to practicing. Eventually his parents came and brought us some dinner, and then we played in the special Friday night Christmas service.
Saturday morning we attended a lovely Christmas service at the church, which included the following music:
John Rutter's Shepherd's Pipe Carol (with orchestra!)
John Rutter's Candlelight Carol
John Rutter's orchestration of O Holy Night
Sunday morning I went to my student's church. She and her mom and and her sister and about 15 other people were playing for the service, and they sounded really, really fantastic - lots of teenagers involved in the music, and they sounded really professional. So glad I went!
Jared worked Sunday and Monday, and Monday night I picked him up at work and we again drove down to his parents' in Oregon. And then for lunch we all four went down to the Big Family Christmas in Salem at Jared's grandparents'. And then we drove back home to Washington and got ourselves ready for bed.
Jared and I have an unofficial no-gifting policy between the two of us. As in, we don't necessarily give each other gifts for the various gifting holidays. And last night, I was done brushing my teeth and getting into bed, and Jared said, go in the living room - there's something out there. I'm thinking, great, the cat has barfed or there's a big, ugly bug he wants me to see. But no, there's a big long box which says Ballance on it. And he tells me I'll need some scissors. So I open the box, and inside there are SNOW SHOES for both of us!!!!!!! You have no idea how excited this makes me. I've been dying to get up into the snow, but it's kind of challenging to hike in deep snow with normal shoes... And I can't afford a lift ticket and shouldn't be downhill skiing right now anyway. A pretty awesome surprise, and he got them on mega-discount when they were on sale plus his employee discount, etc., etc.
And now I know why he was asking me so many questions about how much babies and toddlers weigh at various ages and how long they can ride in a back pack and when they start walking... He was wanting to make sure he got the correct size shoe for him to be hauling our kid on his back until said kid is big enough for his/her own snow shoes. :-) So he's actually going to exchange the ones he got for himself for the next weight up if they still have any....
December has been punctuated with reading through Isaiah, which is pretty heavy stuff, but there are so many beautiful prophecies about Jesus in there which go along so nicely with music by Handel....
Jared's folks sent us home with some gifts from them and from Jared's brother and his wife last night, and we didn't get a chance to open them, so I think we'll have another little Christmas tonight when Jared is home from work. (Friday is going to be his last day at REI.)
Also, my family has collaborated during the last year on a story with different people writing different parts, and it is uproariously funny, because it has so many references to our family history and circumstances, and it is way out of control, because some of us are extremely silly in the creative department. So that was one of our Christmas gifts to ourselves. The beginning and ending of the story are intact, but there is a lot that can fill in the middle, so we will have to work on that part for next year.
This morning, I went with Jared to work to pick up the car we'd left there. And then came to my brothers' to feed their cats, and now I'm catching up on a week's worth of internet stuff. My brother has sent me a new and functioning modem, so when that arrives, we will be fully internet compliant at home!
