Hurricane

Hurricane Ridge, that is.  In the Olympic Mountains, it earned its name because of the winds which buffet it.  We experienced some of them the second day we were up there.  I took Jared up last weekend in honor of his birthday, and we sledded and went snow shoeing in the 240 inches of snow they've gotten so far this season.  We've been there in the summer, but winter is a whole new experience!  It's almost a mile high and only about twenty miles from the coast, so you can see out and across to Victoria Island in Canada.  You will see that I took entirely too many photos, but I do miss living in the snow a lot, and it was wonderful to spend two whole days in it.

There's Canada across the San Juan de Fuca Strait.

Obviously when Anne got tired, Jared got a lot of exercise.

It really was that deep.

The gray jays are undaunted by the Ice Age conditions.

The raven was too fast for my camera.  It was trying to unzip a fellow's back pack, and it was nearly the size of the bag, itself!

For Anne, the best part of the trip was staying in a motel in Port Angeles.  She's only been in a motel one other time.  This one was one of those 1920's motor courts, and family owned.  I will stay there again if I need to spend a night in Port Angeles.  It was not all vintage, but I photographed a couple of vintage details, because they reminded me of our ex-hotel apartment of the same era in Rochester.  Anne was enamored of the mini-fridge, the mini-microwave, the fact that the bathroom sink was her own hight, and the fact that she got a queen-size bed to sleep in....  And after dinner, we played board games together for the first time.  Ever.  Robot Turtles and a simplified version of Rummikub.

Day 2...

Driving down the hill...

The glow on the left of the horizon is the sunset on Mt. Baker, partially obscured by clouds.  The bits of mountains you can see on the horizon on the right is the North Cascades National Park.  That will be a destination for this summer; I really want to check it out, but it is too undeveloped for winter visits within our family's parameters.
