Amazing story

Ok, two posts in a day is not typical.

...But my retired German student I saw this afternoon never ceases to amaze me.  Last week I learned she has (in addition to East Germany, Oregon, and Washington) lived on the East Coast, in the South, in Mexico, in Arizona, and Alaska.  And today I learned that for many years she was a foster mother to multi-handicapped children - up to seven of them at a time!  She was telling me about 7-year-old foster boy she had who was diagnosed as severely retarded and autistic since birth, non-verbal, not potty trained, and fed through a tube.  He was a very angry kid and she had holes in her walls from him.  But she figured out that his main problem was that he was actually deaf, which had never yet been diagnosed for him.  So she learned sign language, and within the year he became potty trained, was able to self-feed, and he could communicate in sign.  She got him adopted by a school psychologist, and at the end of three years, he was caught up to his grade level in school, too.  Such an inspiring story!  And she said that after him, she had to quit being a foster mother, because she knew that no other kid was going to have that amazing of a success story and she'd get too frustrated.
