Wednesday night late I picked up Roy at the airport as he returned from his audition in Michigan. I asked him what time his flight would be on Monday for his return home to Costa Rica. He wasn't sure but looked in up Thursday morning, and a good thing, because it turned out his return flight departed Saturday evening. Surprise #1. So I emailed my brother to see if we could reschedule our planned preemptive Easter dinner to a preemptive Easter lunch...
Jared and Roy and I had planned to go to both Bible study and worship Saturday morning, and especially so that Roy could say goodbye to his US youth group buddies. But apparently late Friday night, Roy spent some time writing down his life story and the part that his time in the US with us played in it, and he sat down at the table with us at Saturday breakfast to read it to us. Surprise #2. It was very special of him to share with us, and it was fascinating to hear what he had learned from living in another culture with another family and studying the violin intensively for the last three months. So we only made it to worship, but hearing Roy's story was worth missing Bible study for.
After church we came back home and finished throwing lunch together and Jeffery and Linda showed up with their contributions and we settled in for a long afternoon of chatting and hanging out before we had to take Roy to the airport at 5:00. Or so I thought. Toward dessert time Jared was over on the computer, and I asked him what he was looking up. To which he replied with a cryptic look "something". Um. Yes. I see. Surprise #3. About five minutes later he said to me, "It's time to go." Me: "Where are we going?" Jared: "Somewhere." Me: "ok..." Jeffrey and Linda, looking like they know all about this, collect their dish and say, "Bye. I guess we'll go now." And Roy, who also does not look mystified picks up his violin case and heads out to the car where it turns out he has already loaded up all of his luggage for his flight. I suddenly put two and two together and realize that Jared is taking me to Sherri's house for a surprise baby shower, and that the violin group class will all be there. Sherri tried to be sneaky, but my radar is super fine-tuned. I happen to love surprise parties, but I am probably better at surprising others than being surprised... Someday maybe I'll tell you about the time I threw a surprise birthday party for both of my roommates simultaneously in our apartment with something on the order of 30 guests.... Anyway, the baby shower was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed seeing my students and their families just for fun and not for business. Plus it was a beautiful day, and Sherri had gone all out!
After that Jared and I went for a walk and ate a wee bit of dinner and then it was bed time, since Jared had to be up early to play for an Easter service this morning.
